Ensemble con Fuoco, under the direction of David Castillo Gocher, presents two powerful works that speak across centuries to themes of suffering, compassion, and renewal. Dieterich Buxtehude’s “Membra Jesu Nostri” (1680), a cycle of seven cantatas meditating on the body of Christ on the cross, remains one of the most moving masterpieces of the early Baroque, uniting expressive beauty with spiritual depth. In counterpoint, Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Caroline Shaw’s “To the Hands” (2016) reimagines the “Ad Manus” portion of Buxtehude’s work, reflecting on displacement and human dignity in today’s world.
The performance will feature continuo accompaniment by Alex Buiel, whose artistry lends vivid color and foundation to Buxtehude’s sacred soundscape.
